Within the space of a few weeks between February and March 2001, two Spirit collectibles appeared on the market:
Graphitti Designs launched their range of Big Blast action figures, which in the initial series has Mike Mignola's Hellboy, Matt Wagner's Grendel, and Will Eisner's Spirit.
The action figure for The Spirit comes with two heads: one with his fedora hat and one hatless but 'battle worn'.
His arms and legs are movable as is his tie! With the figure you get a "Wanted" poster (as depicted on Section #62 - 3rd August 1941); a headstone with the words "RIP DENNY COLT"; and the letters spelling out Spirit!
The action figure is sculpted by Norm DeCarlo and measures roughly 8" tall. There is one oddity about it: the jacker is buttoned up from the wrong side, i.e. its a women's jacket! The Spirit Statue (retailing at a cool $195!) sculpted by William Paquet and based on designs by Will Eisner. The statue is made in China and is a limited edition (1000) cold-cast porcelain figure which is hand painted. It is 12" tall, 5.5" wide and 3.5" deep. On the underside of the base is the limited edition number (out of 1000). This mini-bust is inspired by the 7 April 1946 Spirit section in which The Spirit gets tied up and kissed. DC Direct's mini-bust is a hand-painted, cold-cast porcelain bust sculpted by James Shoop standing approximately 5.25" tall x 3.62" wide. Order Will Eisner's Spirit Classic Mini Bust via Amazon
Number 34 in the series of Classic Comic Characters statues series, this statue comes packaged in a full-color tin box with pinback button and booklet as extras. Created by Yoe! Studios and released by Dark Horse, it is limited to 600 copies. Unfortunately, this item is no longer available from the standard retailers. With the release of the Frank Miller directed movie, and the completion of the DC Archives series, unsurprisingly there have been a couple of new items added during 2008:
Released by Dark Horse in September, this thirteen inch tall statue was designed by Tony Cipriano - this was based on sketches by Eisner for a 3-D sculpture. The full dimensions of this item are 13 inches tall by 7 inches wide and 9 inches long. Like the DC statue this does cost at #175 retail. Click here to buy the Classic Spirit Statue from Amazon
Also released by Dark Horse (this time in October 2008), this mini-bust was based on an unpublished sketch by Will Eisner. Also designed by Tony Cipriano it measures 4.5 inches by 7.5 inches tall. This comes with a separate 'Central City manhole cover' which can be placed near or on the bust. One of the more unusual items which was released in December 2008 is The Spirit Snow Globe - created by sculptors Kolby Jukes and Oluf Hartvigson, it is a limited piece (500 produced) and measures 12 centimetres (approx 4.5 - 5 inches) in height. The inscription on the board reads 'My City Screams. She Is My Mother. She Is My Lover, And I Am Her Spirit'. Click here to buy The Spirit Movie Snow Globe from Amazon
This 'deluxe collector figure' is surprisingly released by DC Comics in December 2008. Based on the character portrayed by Gabriel Macht in the movie, it is 1:6 in scale and packaged in a 4 window display box with a hidden fifth panel. Due to be released by Diamond Select in February 2009, this set of four 'minimates' are based on the movie (including The Spirit, Sand Saref, The Octopus and Silken Floss). Each figure is 2 inches in height and has 14 articulation points. Click here to pre-order The Spirit Movie Minimates Box Set from Amazon
Due to be released by Dark Horse in March 2009, this movie mini-bust is also designed by sculptors Kolby Jukes and Oluf Hartvigson. A limited piece of 750, it is 6 inches in height by 4.3 inches width and 3.15 inches deep. Click here to pre-order The Spirit Movie Mini Bust from Amazon
Designed by Kolby Jukes, this statue will be released by Dark Horse in May 2009. It measures 11.21 inches wide by 7.34 inches deep and 8.5 inches tall. Like the movie mini-bust, it is limited to 750 pieces.
To be released by Dark Horse in May 2009, this pvc set of four figures is designed by Tony Cipriano and each figure measures approximately 3 inches tall and 2.5 inches wide. The three confirmed figures in this set are The Spirit, Commissioner Dolan, Ellen Dolan, and a mysterious fourth female figure - as you can see from the Amazon listing and picture, this seems to be Sand Saref. Included in this set is a 'sculptural' refrigerator magnet based on an Eisner sketch! Click here to pre-order the Classic Spirit PVC Set from Amazon |
